Instructions for New MS Students

Scholarship Categories

  • While the scholarships for 1st semester are given on the basis of your admission merit, it will be revised after every semester based upon last semester’s CGPA.
  • After 1st semester, the number of scholarships in category A,B and C will be 33% of the total class strength.

Offered Courses and Course Registration

Graduate students can register minimum of 6 credit hours (i.e. 2 courses) and a maximum of 12 credit hours (i.e. 4 courses). You are advised to register all 3-core courses (registering minimum 2 core courses is must for 1st semester students). However, it is your own choice to take courses according to the course load you can take.

If you would like to register an elective course then carefully chose a track which you would like to pursue in future.

You should see the timetable quite regularly (everyday) for the first two weeks because it is changed in the beginning due to various reasons. However, it will be freezed in about 2 weeks.

Note: The class of CSC521 Advanced Topics in Computer Architecture will be on Saturdays (3 hours). Its time will be communicated to you.

    events on your mobile (More deadlines and events will appear soon when they are entered by the Graduate Coordinator)

First day in COMSATS

You are welcome to visit on Monday 29th February, 2016 at 11:00 am to meet your Graduate Coordinator. If you don’t plan to register any elective course then the first Core Course class of Operating Systems will be on Wednesday at 3:00 (see timetable).

Orientation Seminar

Access in COMSATS



CUonline ( is a place you will most frequently visit during your MS studies. It links students with teachers, administration, etc. All your academic and administrative matters are recorded and handled through this portal. You will be provided a registration number and login password to access the portal. You will be able to see your marks, fee status, attendance, course contents, CGPA, etc. on this portal. After you get your registration number and password from
Graduate Coordinator, visit following link to login:

Entrance Card

You will receive entrance card which you need to display when you are in the campus. It take about 2 weeks to get the cards. You will receive it from Graduate Coordinator. Before you receive it, you will be provided a temporary card to prove your identity as COMSATS student (especially on the Main Gate).

[PhD Students only] Graduate Student Progress Profile (GraSPP)

All PhD students of the department are advised to login to their CUonline consoles and submit their portion of the Graduate Student Progress Profile (GraSPP) proforma. This is the same proforma you had been submitting in hard-copy after every semester. You should be able to edit->save->submit your part of the proforma after which your supervisor will fill his/her part along with comments.

  • Fill in your proforma carefully after close consultation with your supervisory committee.
  • We will arrange your presentations in the next week wherein you will present your work and progress during Spring 2016. Your GraSPP proforma should reflect everything that you have done (research activities, publications, courses, etc.). You will be required to present even if you are in your first year (e.g. courses taken, supervisor selection, PhD plan, etc.). As this is the first time submission through CUonline, you may also include activities submitted in the previous semesters (copy paste from your GraSSP soft copies of previous semesters).

Important Deadlines:

  • GraSSP must be submitted (online) by the student -> supervisor by August 5, 2016
  • PhD Student Presentations will be held during 8-11 August, 2016
  • Department Advisory Committee (DAC) will forward its Comments on the progress of each PhD student to Chairman, Campus Graduate Program on 12 August, 2016

External Final Thesis Presentations

Dear Students!
Your final presentations are scheduled to start at 08:30 am as per the schedule below. The presentations will be conducted simultaneously in Z-block 2nd floor and Main Conference Room. You must come IN TIME and all prepared with the following:

1. Your own laptop
2. Your presentation copy in USB (as backup to avoid any mishap)
3. You are NOT required to bring the “Final Approval Page”. I will make it available. This will be signed by the External Examiner (its usually 4th page on your thesis)

Your supervisor might not be present in your presentation because tomorrow will be your day. You have done your work and you know it the best – SO HAVE FULL CONFIDENCE in yourself and shine.

Result – Internal Final Presentation Spring 2016

Internal Final Thesis presentations were held during July 14-20 by the Department Advisory Committee (DAC). The result of each evaluation can be downloaded from here: Result – Internal Final Presentations SP 2016


  1. Do changes as suggested by the DAC. Contact supervisor. If suggested changes are not done before External Presentation and are pointed out by the External Examiner then you will be required to DO MAJOR CHANGES which means that extra semester will be required.
  2. Submit your Thesis through Turnitin by July 22, 2016.
  3. Submit your Thesis spiral binding (1 copy) by July 27, 2016 to be given to the External Examiner
  4. Email final presentation to by July 27, 2016.
  5. Following students are document defaulters. Your Final Presentation will not be conducted if your file is not completed by Monday 25th July, 2016.

Internal Final Thesis Presentations

This message is in continuation to the previous message (see here).

Internal Final Thesis Presentations will be conducted from Wednesday, July 13, 2016. In order to appear for the presentation you MUST HAVE DONE the following by July 12, 2016:

  1. Complete Draft of Paper submitted to the supervisor and also submitted to the DAC through Turnitin as mandated and informed at the start of the semester
  2. Certificate of paper submission signed by the supervisor to be submitted to the Graduate Coordinator (Download from here)
  3. First draft of Thesis to be submitted through Turnitin for onward review by the External Examiner
  4. All fee dues cleared.


Submit Outstanding dues by 28th

Following students are FEE DEFAULTERS who must have paid their remaining dues by now. You MUST submit your dues by 28th June, 2016 to get your Exam Entry Coupon. PMFRS students should also clear their dues as they have received their cheques from HEC->OOD.

Students ready for Thesis final presentations in Spring 2016 should have cleared their all dues otherwise they will not be allowed to appear in the presentations.

If the outstanding amount shown in the above table is incorrect then inform me.


1st Internal Final Thesis Presentations

MS students who have completed their research work can appear for the 1st internal presentation of the Final Thesis. If your supervisor is satisfied with your work then come prepared for the presentations starting from Tuesday 21st June, 2016. Thesis Presentation

There is NO presentation template as such; however your presentation MUST have slides to include the following:

  • Introduction
  • Motivations
  • Related Work
  • Problem Statement
  • Research Methodology
  • Proposed Solution
  • Results/Evaluation
  • Conclusion/Future Work
  • References

Next Step:

You are not required to submit anything at this stage except emailing your presentation. However, keep in mind that to be allowed to appear for the external exam, following pre-requisites are MUST:

  • Satisfactory presentation of your thesis work approved by the Department Advisory Committee (starting from Tuesday 21st)
  • Paper submission by 11th July, 2016 (to DAC through Turnitin)
  • 2nd presentation (representation) of the suggested changes to be held after 11th July, 2016 (if suggested in the 1st presentations)

Students who will clear these requirements will be recommended for the External Final Thesis Presentations starting from 25th July, 2016

PM Laptop Distribution Ceremony

Prime Minister’s Laptop Distribution Ceremony for the MS/PhD students is taking place in the Main Auditorium of CIIT Abbottabad on June 20, 2016 at 8:00 am. Executive Director of HEC will preside at the ceremony.  If you have received a confirmation email from HEC as an MS/PhD student, and have submitted the required affidavit in the Registrar office of Abbottabad campus. Please visit COMSATS Abbottabad on Monday/ Tuesday to collect your laptop. Those who have not submitted the affidavit can come with the affidavit before 2:00 pm. Please come at your assigned day & date:

Monday, June 20, 2016 (Distribution to MS/PhD  programs of Pharmacy, Management, Environmental Sciences, and Civil Engineering programs)

Tuesday, June 21, 2016 (Distribution to MS/PhD programs of Chemistry, Development Studies, Computer Sciences, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, and Electrical Engineering). Bring Original CNIC and Student ID card (in case of enrolled students)

The Bachelor students will be awarded on a later date, as decided by HEC.
